Local transportation

On the weekend Lukas, a German volunteer, Niv (the house manager) and I went for lunch near Durbar Square. Normally I’ve been getting around by taxi but Niv took us on a tuk tuk, which is completely different from a tuk tuk in India! The tuk tuks here are bigger and shared. It is kind of like a bus system. There are different tuk tuks that take different routes and they are identified by numbers and everything. There are also local proper buses though. The taxis usually cost about 300 rupees, but the tuk tuk cost 24! It was about a half hour ride and not as crazy as I thought it might be. After my experience in India with local transportation, this was a breeze. It did get crowded for a bit, but for the most part, it was just a regular, bumpy bus ride.

Niv took us to an Indian restaurant called Aangan which was pretty good. I had a samosa chaat which was nice and spicy (and veggie) and a cold coffee. I’m glad I didn’t take the masala dosa that Niv suggested because it was gigantic. I tried some of Lukas’s though and it was yummy. They also had lots of Indian desserts which I tried as well. I don’t know what it was called but it was yummy. After lunch we just went for a walk around the area and stumbled on a park where lots of people were playing football (soccer) and cricket. We stayed to watch for about half an hour, and I learned the basics of cricket.

It was a nice quiet afternoon! 🙂
